Overview
Odisha also known as Orisa, is the 8th largest state by geography and one of the largest state by population. The state also boasts one of the larges tribal population in India. It has 450 kms of coastline along the Bay of Bengal. The state language Oriya or Odia or Odisha is one of the national languaage of the Union of India.
The stae has history that dates back to 261 BCE recording the imfamous Kalinga war which coinsides with current modern state. However, it was during British India rule, the province of Orisa was established in April of 1936 with Bihar and Orisa combined state based on wide spoke the then language i.e. oriya. Till 1948 Cuttack was the capital of the then state and post independence of India Bhuvaneshwar / Bhubaneswar became the capital of Odisha.
Odisha is called as state of temples because the state has very ancinet temples that dates back to 10th century. The state is known for its ancinet Hindu culture and tradition. In state’s longest and continuous history of various faiths such as Hinduism, Jainism and non religion. Ashoka’s conquest of Kalinga made Buddhism one the major religion along with other non religion centres. During Kharvela’s reign Jainism found prominence. However, by the middle of 9th century Hinduism revived and got popular mainly due to various temples being built and also due to Adi Shankaracharya proclaimed Puri as one of the four holiest places or Char Dham for Hinduism.
